Why Beedles Lake Never Uses Temporary Greens
Winter is when many golf courses move to temporary greens. At Beedles Lake that never happens: we play on our full greens all year round, even in the depths of winter. Here is why.
It goes back to how the course was built
Before the course opened on 1 July 1993, the site had been used by Jelson Ltd for sand and gravel excavation, followed by landfill. When the greens were built, ash was used as the root-zone. This was against all advice on green construction at the time, but Jelsons organised experiments and showed it to be good growing matter with excellent drainage.
That drainage is the reason Beedles Lake never has to use temporary greens. The full story is in our history of the club.
Looked after all year round
Head Greenkeeper Sam Shuttlewood and his staff present the course so that you can play on the greens and tees all year round, with well maintained fairways and bunkers.
Play this winter
Winter green fees apply from 30 November 2026, and societies of 8 or more are welcome 7 days a week. See winter golf at Beedles Lake for the winter fees and society packages, or book a round with Visitor Booking.
